Illustration GrowerHub: watering card with volume, pH, fertilizer and date

The watering log answers a simple question: what did the plant actually receive? Not “it seems like it was watered recently,” but the date, volume, composition of the water and the condition of the substrate. For one pot, this helps to avoid repeating mistakes. For multiple zones and mini-farms, the log becomes the basis for reporting, maintenance and recommendations.

Recording watering shouldn't take a minute per plant. If the process is too difficult, it is stopped. In GrowerHub it is worth recording only what helps make decisions: the volume of water, the method of watering, pH if necessary, fertilizer, the reason for watering and a noticeable result.

Water volume

Volume is the main parameter, because everyone understands the words “a little” and “well spilled” in their own way. For a pot you can record milliliters, for a bed - liters per line or pump operating time if the flow rate is measured in advance. If automatic watering is used, the log should show the actual activations, and not just the plan.

Volume helps differentiate drying out from water delivery errors. If the pump was running but the substrate was dry, the tube may be pinched or the dropper may be clogged. If the volume increases and the plant looks worse, it is worth checking the overflow, roots and ventilation. The material overfilling or underfilling according to sensor data helps to read such situations.

pH and feeding

pH is not always needed, but when you are using nutrient solutions or sensitive crops, the entry becomes useful. It is important to record not only the number, but also the context: water before adding fertilizer, the finished solution, the date of calibration of the device. Otherwise the log creates false precision.

It is better to write down feeding as composition, dosage and reason. For example: “half the recommended dose after transplantation” is clearer than “fertilizer”. If symptoms appear after a few days, you will be able to associate them with the action. The minimum set of nutrition data is described in the article pH and feeding.

Reason for watering

The entry "watering 500 ml" is better than nothing, but it's the reason that makes it useful. Did you water on a dry top layer, by sensor, on a schedule, after a hot day, or after replanting? After a month, it is the reason that helps to understand whether the regime was deliberate or accidental.

For automatic watering, the reason may be automatic: the humidity threshold has triggered, the schedule has arrived, the operator started it manually. In the GrowerHub log, such events should be shown separately so as not to mix the decisions of the controller and the person.

How often to watch the magazine

It is not necessary to analyze every record at once. It’s more convenient to open the history once a week and look at three things: how much water was used, whether there were frequent adjustments, and whether the watering coincides with the condition of the plant. If every week you change the volume in different directions, then the regime is not yet stable.

For a greenhouse, the watering log is linked to water accounting. It shows not only care, but also resource consumption. This topic is covered in the article accounting for water and irrigation in a greenhouse.

Conclusion

The watering log should be short but specific: date, zone, volume, reason, pH and fertilizer where it really matters. Such records allow you to read graphs, adjust automatic watering and explain problems not from memory, but from facts.
