Soft equipment recommendations for connecting Zigbee2MQTT to GrowerHub, from a coordinator and one sensor to smart plugs and optional extensions.

Minimum setup

Monitoring

Always-on computer or Raspberry Pi, supported Zigbee coordinator and one temperature/humidity sensor.

Control

For control, add a Zigbee smart plug. Soil sensors, leak sensors and other equipment can be connected later.

Keep an existing setup

If Zigbee2MQTT and Home Assistant are already running, the local bridge will leave MQTT in place and transfer only the necessary topics to GrowerHub.

Choose Zigbee first

For most common sensors and smart plugs, a Zigbee or Zigbee 3.0 label is enough: Zigbee2MQTT discovers the device and it then appears in GrowerHub. Check the exact model ID in the Zigbee2MQTT catalogue when possible to see available metrics and commands, but there is no need to buy only expensive brands.

Zigbee coordinators for GrowerHub

A particular brand is not required: affordable CC2652P USB sticks and other adapters from the Zigbee2MQTT list work well with GrowerHub. SONOFF remains a common branded option.

Zigbee sensors for getting started

For the first monitoring, one Zigbee temperature and humidity sensor is sufficient. The screen is convenient for checking readings on site, and soil and leakage sensors can be added at any time.

Zigbee smart plugs for control

For basic control, a regular Zigbee smart plug rated for the connected load is enough. Affordable white-label models can work just as well as branded options, and GrowerHub shows the available commands after connection.

Why not every Wi-Fi sensor works

Most retail Wi-Fi sensors from Tuya and similar ecosystems depend on the manufacturer's cloud and do not let you configure GrowerHub MQTT. Suitable exceptions are devices with open local MQTT configuration and GrowerHub hardware.
