The first set of smart watering should not be the maximum. For 5-10 plants, it is more important to assemble an understandable and maintainable system than to immediately buy many channels, complex valves and a dozen sensors. A good starter kit allows you to test one zone, see graphs, set limits, and make sure the water is going where it needs to go.

Start with a group of plants with similar requirements. For example, several pots of the same size on a rack or one line of seedlings. In the first scenario, do not mix a large tomato, small greens and a plant in a dense substrate. The simpler the zone, the faster it will become clear whether the scheme works.

Basic components

The minimum set: a controller or controlled relay, a pump of suitable power, a water tank, tubes, droppers or distributors, a soil moisture sensor, a leakage sensor and an understandable power supply. If the pump is powered from the mains through a socket, check the permissible load and operating conditions. For small pots, a pump with short dosed bursts is often more convenient. For a long line, pressure, equal flow at distant points and the absence of kinks in the tube are important. The tank is placed so that it is easy to top up and inspect, and the connections do not hang above the electrics.

One sensor is better than many random ones

At the start, one well-installed humidity sensor in the control plant or zone is enough. It should show dynamics after watering and drying out, and not just a random number. If you put several sensors without understanding, you will get more graphs, but no more confidence.

Before automatic mode, use the sensor as an observer. Water by hand, compare readings with the state of the substrate, note typical values before and after watering. Protection is mandatory from day one

Don't put off safety until later. Even the starter kit must have a duration limit, a pause between starts and an emergency lock. A leak sensor costs less than the consequences of a popped tube. If the system has a manual mode, it should be visible in the interface and turn off after maintenance.

Startup order

First, assemble the system without plants: reservoir, pump, tubes and measuring container. Measure how much water comes out in 10, 20 and 30 seconds. Then connect the drippers to the pots and check the distribution. Only after this add a humidity sensor and a rule in the controller.

Then enable an automatic rule with conservative limits. If everything is stable, increase autonomy: add notifications, leakage, maintenance schedule and communication with other sensors.

What not to buy right away

Don't start with a complex set of valves if you don't already know the water flow. There is no need for a separate sensor in each pot if the plants stand the same and are watered in one line. There is no need for a cloud service as the only decision point: the basic pump stop must run locally. It's better to spend time measuring and carefully laying out the tubes.
